Signed up to new contract without proper advice

I attended the MEO office in Portimao to find out if I could reduce the cost of my package. I was told this was not possible but they could give me a better package at about the same price that included a Portuguese esim. I agreed and asked them to set it up.

I now find that they are saying this new package is for 24 months with a $590 penalty if I finish early.

I was not advised that I was getting a new package with a minimum charge. When I was in their office they said I had to accept the email they sent me to get the new number. The new contract was attached to this email. They did not tell me this in the shop, I only found out later when I tried to cancel the service.

They said I had to cancel within 14 days of having the new contract. How is this possible when nobody told me I was getting a new contract.

I still want to cancel but I don’t want to pay $590 penalty. Can someone advise?

Thanks

Contracts made in stores are valid immediately. The 14-day cancellation period doesn't apply.
