MEO or NOS for fiber? Obligated to use MEO's "FiberGateway"?

I need to sign up for fiber internet. My location allows for service from either MEO or NOS fiber. I am deciding between the two services.

Two main questions:
A) Do you recommend using MEO or NOS for fiber internet and why?
B) Are MEO users forced to use the "FiberGateway" router or can they use their own modem and router equipment?

Context A:

I have heard mixed reviewed about MEO vs NOS. Reading through the forums I am seeing a variety of posts saying MEO fiber services is not consistent/reliable, customer services is not responsive, and there is a limit to what devices/ports can be used. If you were starting out and needed fiber would you select MEO? If yes why, if no why?

Context B:

The documentation on the MEO website does not seem to clearly indicate whether users MUST use the router/modem equipment from MEO, specifically the "FiberGateway" device. Are users able to connect different modems and routers?

Context from others:

After asking around I have heard mixed things about MEO, most of them have not been good. Any thoughts to help make my decision are appreciated.

@David27 Thank you for your response.

Any thoughts on whether users must* use the Fiber Gateway device? Looking at the specs for the device, it seems that any device with a “GPON” port would work  (Conector SC/APC para cabo de fibra ótica Single Mode).

If you get the Fibergateway, you can set it to bridge mode and use your own router. If you get a ONT with one of the other ISP routers, you can ditch that router completely if you’re not planning to use the telephone service (voip).

Depends on your location, MEO or NOS could be better, but usually MEO is better.

Most of the times, NOS doesn’t get fiber into people’s homes, they use a coax cable from the street to inside the house, so you’re not getting “true” fiber, and because of that you will most likely have latency and bandwidth issues on peak hours, when many people on your street are using the internet.

@technoshaman I am curious on your opinion. Looking at other posts, you seem to have a lot of knowledge. Any thoughts are appreciated.

@David27 Thank you for the idea.

I am considering this combination. Do you think MEO will have an issue with these?

The router should be ok. The ONT you really have to use the one from the ISP.

Thank you again for the responses.

I was really hoping to avoid having to use any equipment from MEO because of the negative comments from other posts. Wouldn’t using an ONT from an ISP result in the same issues or limitations other users have posted about?

I have never encountered those issues. You can use Meo’s ONT, no problem at all. Then get your Asus router and do anything you want.
